Bembridge Fort History Walk

8/10/24 Bembridge Fort Trust were pleased to welcome 23 walkers as part of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival. Possibly the longest walk that doesn’t actually get very far! – the group effectively went round the amazing fort in circles, four times, at different levels – probably a first for the festival! and covered around 3 miles in the same space.

The walkers were met at the bridge by their guide and walked round the outside of the fort in the usual walk and talk format – the incredible scenery and views being explained along with the forts unique history and its place in the history of West Wight.

Then a first – the walkers were led down into the dry ditch to walk around the fort – below the fort – and all were amazed by the sheer scale of the building – thanks to Ash for stepping in as backup dry ditch/many steps/younger knees guide and to David for his help. Then up into the fort for a walk around the upper terreplein and then inside the fort for another loop including descending into one of the caponiers and through the main gun powder magazine. £190 was raised for the Fort Trust – thank you all!
