IWWF23: A historic stroll down Yaverland Beach (blog post)

Superb afternoon stroll all along (and back again) an almost deserted Yaverland beach with near perfect weather – probably our largest walk group of 44 walkers plus a large number of four legged friends accompanied walk leader and historian Tim Wander (limping for Britain with a broken toe) as he showed the group something of the incredible history of the very long beach, Sandown Bay and the Downs above. From Dinosaurs to Lignite mines, Romans to Vikings, French attacks and Palmerston Forts, Secret loop WW2 detection systems, collapsed search light and machine batteries and a lost harbor – the beach has them all and much more….  No one took the suggestion to scramble round the Culver Cliff headland and onto Whitecliff Bay to take the high road back – a sensible option as the tide has turned and it does come in quickly. A literal pass-the-hat round collection raised £52.20 for Northwood House Charitable Trust – many thanks all who came.
